Wise Judgment Scenario Essay Example for Free
Wise Judgment Scenario Essay The wise judgment scenario that I have chosen to write on is the teenage girlà in love. The teenaged girlââ¬â¢s boyfriend that she is in love with is encouraging her to have sex; he is saying he will make sure they only have protected sex. Older woman can usually relate to situations like this, because we were all once young. I have personally dealt with this wise judgment situation but at a younger age. When coming to situations like these one must make a wise judgment, this will take place with in the perception of the person. There are several questions the young girl needs to think about; am I old enough, do I really love him, is it worth it, or is he worth it. The person needs to look with in her emotional perception. This is the personââ¬â¢s ability to identify emotions and recognize them in others. The teenage girl needs to think, does he really show emotions for me as I do for him. She thinks that she is in love, but how does she know she is not experiencing lust for the boy? Maybe the couple spends too much time together, and she cannot decipher her emotions because she is constantly with him. If she was to go hang out with friends maybe then she could open up and realizes if this is something she should avoid at this age. Mood changes sometimes enable people to appreciate different and more points of view. This scenario is almost a hard factor for a lot of people to try and make judgments towards. I think this is because we do not know how old the teenage girl is, and we do not know her or the boy friends back ground. Now in our present time, teenage pregnancy is very common now, and most of them our in their very low teens. I think this should have a lot to do with decisions making when it comes to unprotected sex. If the boy friend says he will make sure, it is also in her wise judgment to make sure as well, not just him. Wise judgment has been hypnotized into five components, to better help people understand. The first component is factual knowledge about matters of life. This means this includes knowledge about human nature, interpersonal relations, and social norms (Ch 4, pg94). The teenage girlà needs to get more information about interpersonal relation and human nature. This will help her understand how relationships work, and she can find out if she is in love with him or is it lust. If this is her first relationship it is more than likely going to be lust. As teenagers hormones kick in they like whoever is the first persons to show them the attention they like. This could also be another factor in her having sex with this boy. He could be using her because he knows she is irritable. The next component is procedural knowledge, this deal with weighing goals, methods of handling conflict, and ways of offering advice. The teenagers can use this knowledge by weighing goals that they wish to have as they get older. For example if they want to go to college, or even get married in a couple years, what if they have kids. All these need to be thought about when they are being sexual active because having protected sex does not always 100% prevent births. So they need t think, what happens if we do get pregnant, will I still be able to achieve the goals that I had before hand, like finishing school. Handling conflict is also a strategy they can think about, what if they have sex and they end up breaking up. Questions like where would we go from there? The third component is lifespan contextualism, this is knowledge about different roles and contexts of life and how they may change in life. The teenage couple may not realize that as they grow older and mature that there might be someone else out there for them. If they can learn to wait and enjoy being teenagers and not have to possible deal with the risk and responsibilities of life, they might find more friends and things to do. In a life we come in contact with so many people, making so many friends along the way. Life is to enjoy and not grow up to fast, live and learn. Next is the fourth component of wise judgment and it is recognition and management of uncertainly. This is that the future cannot be fully known in advance and that life is unpredictable. This should be a very big component in talking about sexual relations, especially between young people. Having a child at a young age is something that cannot be predicted. Even protected sex can go wrong; the best protection is not having sex until parent hood is ready. The last component to wise judgment is relativism regarding solutions. This is to acknowledge individual and cultural differences in values and life priorities. This brings us back to goals. Setting goals as a younger person is vary valuable in life, it can help you reach what you want to be in life.à The teenagers need to be aware of their goals and not only a couple but as individuals. They need to be fully aware of the effects that teen sex can cause. They need to think what happens if she does get pregnant are they financially responsible to take care of another life. Based on the five components of wise judgments the decision that I have made regarding this scenario is that they should wait. I have chosen to make this decision because all the facts make sense. If the teenagers are in ââ¬Å"loveâ⬠then I believe that they should be able to wait a little bit longer. They need to wait and make sure they are finished with school and both have reliable jobs. I think these are important to look at because if she happens to get pregnant she will not have to quit school or fall behind on school work, since she will be graduated. Also having jobs and an established place is a big deal. They do not want to have the burden of having a baby and not having anyway of raising the baby. Also it says that he is encouraging her into having sex, and I think that this is a form of peer pressure and on his behalf is not fair. Younger teenage girls are very vulnerable when it comes to having a boyfriend interested in being with them. So I think waiting is the true test of their relationship.

Effect of Temperature on the Resistivity of a Semiconductor
Effect of Temperature on the Resistivity of a Semiconductor Introduction A thermistor is a resistance thermometer, or a resistor whose resistance is dependent on temperature. The term is a combination of thermal and resistor. It is made of metallic oxides, pressed into a bead, disk, or cylindrical shape and then compressed with an impermeable material such as epoxy or glass. This means that they are made out of semiconductor material, which shows changes in resistance depending on changes in temperature. Due to their predictable characteristics and long-term stabilityit can be measured by using a small and measured direct current or dc passed through the thermistor in order to measure the voltage drop produced. Thermistors are an incredibly accurate category of temperature sensors. In this experiment we expect that as temperature decreases as the resistivity increases Theory In this experiment we are to prove direct evidence for the effect of the temperature on the resistivity of a semiconductor thus, the thermistor. Some devices made of semiconductors decrease their resistance as the temperature increases due to the extra energy, which makes the atoms release electrons, permitting them to move more easily, this in turn reduce the resistance. T is for temperature and the unit is Kelvin (K). R is for resistance the unit is Ohmââ¬â¢s (à ©).Resistance thermometry is a temperature measurement technique that uses the change in electrical resistance of a material as its temperature changes. They are two types of thermistors. The less used is theresistance temperature detectors (RTD .The most suitable type of thermistor used is the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor, which consists of two terminal solid-state electronic mechanisms that displays a huge, expected difference in resistance matching to changes in the absolute body temperature. A simple estimate for the bond between resistance and temperature for a NTC thermistor is the use of the exponential approximation between both. It is based on the easy curve fitting to the experimental data and uses two points on the curve to determine the value of the value of à ². The equation relating resistance to temperature using à ² is: Where; R = thermistor resistance at temperature T A = constant of equation Ãâ = beta, the material constant T = thermistor temperature (k) Health and safety Health and safety instructions are mainly common sense precautions but one has to be careful. In addition, flyers are printed out pasted on notice boards, windows and doors make it clearer and obvious not one to miss the principal instructions of each experiment. Instructors are there to constantly remind and read out instructions of the laboratory use and to report and possibly solve any predicted damage. In this experiment we take these precautions; Ensure that lab coats are worn Make sure that the beaker is held from the top rather than the bottom to avert unpropitious effects of the heat at the bottom. Switch the digital multimeter on and off where necessary Ensure beaker has no linkages Avoid parallax error on the thermometer and beaker by observing it at eyelevel. Assure lab equipments are kept well on the table to avoid falling down on to feet i.e. hot water on feet Apparatus Used In order to do this experiment we require to posses these apparatus; 2 x 4 mm connecting leads, one Digital multimeter set on resistance range, Source of sultry dihydrogen monoxide; an electric kettle, Frozen dihydrogen monoxide cubes or Crushed frozen dihydrogen monoxide, A Thermistor 1 thermometer, Stirrer,1 x 500 ml beaker Technique I put dihydrogen monoxide in an electric kettle for it to boil while I placed thermistor wrapped with a thermometer in the beaker, utilized the leads and crocodile clips designated for the purport of the annexation of the cables. I now situated the beaker at the base of the retort stand, integrated boiling dihydrogen monoxide received from the electric kettle in to it to a 300 ml mark. I then ascertained that the retort is opportunely in position such that the thermometer does not all to deep into the boiling dihydrogen monoxide. I adjusted the multimeter to a range of 20Kà © as verbalized in the instructions and poured in some cold dihydrogen monoxide / crushed frozen dihydrogen monoxide. I now accumulated and record the data of the immersion heater in a table and the temperature and resistance every 5à °C is recorded warm the dihydrogen monoxide. The electric kettle is then further used to increment temperature. Crushed frozen dihydrogen monoxide was put from time to time to avai l expedite the rate at which the temperature decremented. Results From the experiment, for every 5à °c vicissitude in temperature the resultant value of the resistance is quantified. From table below we revealed that two values for resistance were taken (R1 and R2) which are in ohms (à ©). This was done to ascertain precision and precision in readings is precise Additionally, from the table it is observed that the logarithm of the average resistance is taken, it is represented as Ln(R) in the table. Additionally, it is descried from table 1 that as the temperature decremented the resistance incremented. 1 it is withal descried that as the temperature decremented the logarithm of the average resistance incremented. Discussion From the first graph of average resistance against temperature it is pragmatic that the graph gives a curve whereas the second graph, which is the graph of logarithm of the resistance against temperature, gives a linear graph. Likewise, from the graph it is observed that as the temperature decreases the resistance increases. This implicatively insinuates that the thermistor used is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor. It is additionally observed from table that as the temperature decremented the value of the logarithm of the average resistance incremented. This might have been done to speed up the process therefore altering some of the values. In addition, the thermistors have advantages over thermocouple. They have a higher signal to noise ratio compared with that of a thermocouple and due to their smaller size they respond quicker to temperature difference. However, thermistors are insubstantial are not easily changeable and are expensive times when clemency is required Conclusion The values gotten shows the resistivity increases as the temperature decreases. It is believed that the calibration process presented here represents a Reliable technique by which to achieve the required temperature-measurement. One way to describe the curve of an NTC thermistor is to measure the slope of the resistance versus temperature (R/T) curve at one temperature. By definition, the coefficient of resistance is given by; à ± =1â âR * dR / dT References Ametherm.com, (n.d.). What is an NTC Thermistor | Ametherm. The Genre Of Documentary Photography
The Genre Of Documentary Photography In his examination of Lt. Col. Oliver L. Norths portrait, taken by Harry Benson for Life Magazine (1987), Andy Grundberg (1988) emphasizes the importance of the camera position, background elements and attitude of the subject towards a heroic appearance, even though the reality was somewhat different, visible in another, less interesting news photograph of Colonel North facing the full house of Congress. The juxtaposition of the two photographs makes one think of the kind of information photographs leave behind. Is it an actual reflection of the actuality or something more interpretable and selective? Putting this into the perspective of the pre-photographic history one could say that photographs are better representations of the historical events than say, paintings or drawings. Nevertheless this is not entirely true because photography can also be biased exactly as a painting using different capturing techniques, angles, and recently computer aided photo manipulation which makes everything so much easier to tamper with. John Griersons which is generally accepted as being the father of the documentary genre characterized it as the creative treatment of actuality. The first question that comes to my mind is why did he use the term actuality and not reality? For this we have to take a look at the definition of actuality. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary actual means existing in fact or reality. In my opinion reality is what you interpret and you think something is, and actuality is what it really is by looking at the facts. Reality and actuality are strongly connected and one can say that reality is what you perceive from actuality. John Tagg (p.172, 1988) argued that It is not a question of the struggle for truth but, rather, of a struggle around the status of truth and the economic and political role it plays. One of the iconic photographs that apply to this statement is Dorothea Langes Migrant Mother and the extensive debates around the truthfulness of the photograph. Is it that important that the photograph was staged, edited and cropped or not? The point is that even though it might be a staged photograph it still conveys the reality of the time. Lange was sent on assignment for the Farms Security Administration to document the poverty of the share-croppers. The story she associated with the image was not entirely true but it efficiently showed the condition of the migrant workers. It is arguable that the changes made to the original Migrant Mother photograph created the notoriety of the image (i.e. the editing out of the thumb, and the possible staging of the photograph). If we look at some of the other images from the shoot we can see clearly that at least one of the children is smiling. This could lead to the belief that Lange posed the two children with their faces behind her mother to hide their light heartedness. The final portray and the iconic image of the Migrant Mother is relating to what Grierson refers as creative treatment of actuality and nevertheless a reality for everyone who saw the image at the time. Another very well-known photograph which had a lot of debate whether is true or not, is one made by Duane Michals called This Photograph is My Proof. Duane admittedà [1]à he is gay in many of his interviews, so how can this photograph be true? He realised he is gay before his 20s and the photograph is taken when he was in his 30s thus leading us to think the photograph was staged. Tagg (p.16, 1993) argued that The camera seems to declare: This really happened. The camera was there. See for yourself. Ask yourself under what conditions would a photograph of the Loch Ness Monster or an Unidentified Flying Object become acceptable as proof of their existence? It seems that for Tagg the actuality of a photograph can only be proven by other means and not only by the photo on itself. The general belief is that photography is an objective medium able to portray an objective reality, but if we think about it one photograph is just one point of view. Just by changing the angle in which you take the photograph you can change its whole meaning. Edward Weston and Paul Strand were among the ones that strongly believed the mechanical nature of the camera is the most powerful argument for the truthfulness of photographs. In the book On photography, Sontag argues that (p176, To us, the difference between the photographer as an individual eye and the photographer as an objective recorder seems fundamental, the difference often regarded, mistakenly, as separating photography as art from photography as document. But both are logical extensions of what photography means: note-taking on, potentially, everything in the world, from every possible angle. This approach suggests that every image taken for artistic purposes or for recording purposes has a documentary quality. It means that even though someone took a photograph for aesthetic purposes its still a recording, but from another point of view. She further explains that the two attitudes underlie the presumption that anything in the world is material to the camera. If we could photograph the same subject from every angle by many different creative eyes we could end up with a series of images that show the actuality. Martin Parr had a different approach on documentary photography adding humour and irony to almost If not all of his photographs. He has a unique way of telling a story which is often harsh. His creative style is covered in irony, and this generates a very strong statement about society. His approach seems to be very close to actuality even if his unique style is very distinct. In her book called Documentary Dilemmas, Caroline Anderson (p.1, 1991) talks about Frederick Wiseman and his documentary film Titicut Follies saying that he (i.e. Wiseman) considered his films as reality fictions. Anderson (p.1, 1991) argues that Wiseman didnt want to be responsible for representing social actuality in an objective manner. He used the ambiguous term of reality fiction as an excuse to be able to classify his work in both documentary genre and as an artistic creation. Anderson (p.2, 1991) claims that Wiseman used the term of reality fiction as a claim upon film theory and not to point at the inevitable tension between actuality and film. Nevertheless Titicut Follies is still a documentary film. Elizabeth Cowie (p.22, 2011) referring to the recording of actuality in both photography and film, claims that two different predilections exist. There is the need for reality as a fact and the ability to review it, and on the other hand there is the need of rational knowledge, conveyed through logical interpretation. This idea reflects upon John Griersons creative treatment of actuality in a sense that a documentary creation has to represent the actuality but also to help the viewer see the reality which the creator wants to deliver. Looking at my own photographs for an example of Griersons statement I chose a photograph which shows a woman sleeping on the pavement between two bags that read A bag For Life. This photograph was taken a few steps from my place and could be a good example of the creative treatment of actuality. My intention was to articulate the fact that the woman was homeless but the reality is she can be anyone and anything and she just happened to enjoy the sunshine. A while ago I was asking myself if documentary photography is the middle ground between art and actuality. I was putting actuality, documentary photography and fine art photography in a hierarchy, fine art photography being on the highest ranks. This is because actuality on its own is not interesting, it does not have that spark of genius documentary photography and it does not have the creative approach of fine art photography. One of the best examples of how documentary photography shed light on the social injustices around the world is the Magnum Agency. Founded by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier- Bresson, George Rodger and David Chim Seymour the agency had, and still has, the purpose of chronicle the world through the distinctive eyes of each member thus creating a complete image of the society. Documentary photography indeed can be seen as a genre which binds the aspirations of photojournalism with the ones of photographic art, thus becoming a kind of bridge or grey area, if you like. The main characteristic of documentary photography is the appetite for social subjects that go beyond the simple story in the newspaper, becoming increasingly subjective but at the same time holding a grip to actuality and truth. For me creativity represents the fingerprint which the photographer applies to the raw actuality with the purpose of creating his own reality to share with the world.

Have you ever heard a song once and was never able to get the tune out of your head no matter how hard you tried? I know that has happened to me on several occasions. Whether we enjoy the songs or not, there is something about music within popular culture that drives the American public wild. Sadly, for quite sometime the music industry was largely closed off to women. Of course there were obvious exceptions to this, since talented female artists have existed through the ages, but on the whole there were not many female artists that got a lot of airplay and certainly none were considered significantly influential in the music industry. Recently the United States has begun to experience a womenââ¬â¢s musical renaissance. Womenââ¬â¢s roles in pop music are steadily growing. There have been many outstanding female musicians and vocalists in the past that have aided in making the music industry less of a male opinionated society, from Aretha Franklin, Mo Tucker, and Ella Fitzgerald to pop icons like Courtney Love, Queen Latifa, and Melissa Ethridge. Along side these, there are two women who have conquered most obstacles theyââ¬â¢ve faced and, in addition, forced the music industry to become more of a female friendly environment. Those two women are Madonna and Brittany Spears. Madonna is an artist that most Americans are very familiar with. From rudeness to charity, she is always in the public eye. Madonna took women and sex through a quantum leap and her unique style and flair has been imprinted on pop culture forever. Besides creating major trends in music she was responsible for many fashion statements throughout the eighties and nineties (Gandee 307). Up until 1982, female sexuality was largely a suggestion of cleavage and tight-fitting jeans, then Madonna showed up in 1983 wearing her Victoria's Secrets on the outside, and all hell broke loose. Madonna Ciccone was born in 1958 near Motown, to an engineer father and homemaker mother, the eldest of eight children. The one thing baby Madonna wanted more than anything was to become famous. She trained on piano and dance, and signed up for almost any activity that would put her face in public view. By the time she turned twenty, she felt she had waited long enough for fame to find her, and went out looking for it. Throughout her career as one of Americaââ¬â¢s superstars, Madonna maintained much of her creative control while... ...stry seem obtainable to everyone. Their accomplishments represent many of the recent victories won by women in the music industry; Accomplishments like Lilith Faire and Rock for Choice. Though many doors have been opened there are many that have remained shut. For instance, the way that many labels choose to market female artists like sex symbols instead of relying on their ability to perform. A women musician are becoming more and more visible, and with this visibility comes power. Ani DiFranco and Madonna are just two examples of women who are starting their own record labels and signing their own bands. By doing this they are insuring that female artists get heard. Obviously, not every women musician can have this kind of determination, but the fact that they are on stage playing what they love, music, makes them powerful. Oââ¬â¢Dair, Barbara. "Introduction". Classification Essay - Types of Gas Pumpers :: Classification Essays
Types of Gas Pumpers à There are many types of people who purchase gasoline, but three types are easy to spot. All three have an obvious physical appearance which sets them apart from other gas purchasers. Each also has a distinctive pumping technique and freely vocalizes his opinion. Finally, each type has a particular way of annoying every other patron at the same location. à The first type of gas purchaser is Leisure Lou. He can be identified immediately by his appearance. He drives a station wagon with wooden side panels and a bumper sticker that tells the world that he is retired. His Hawaiian print shirt captures everyone's attention. He wears Bermuda shorts and black socks with sandals. On his head sits a fly fisherman's hat which is his obvious display of a continuous state of leisure. His pumping technique also sets him apart from the normal crowd. When he parks his car, he stops at the first pump, preventing the use of the pump in front of him. He always pays for his gas in advance, so that the attendant can preset the pump and he will not have to worry about stopping the pump himself. He activates the pump before opening the access door and unscrewing the tank lid. He tucks the hose under his elbow and spills gas on his hip while opening the tank. As Leisure Lou leans against the side of his car, he pumps his gas absent-mindedly, conf ident that the pump will stop before gas pours onto the ground. Once the pump stops, he replaces the hose and screws on the tank lid but forgets to close the access door. Leisure Lou even vocalizes his not-a-care-in-the-world attitude. He whistles some melodic tune from The Sound of Music while pumping his gas. When inside the convenience store, he tells everyone how wonderful retirement is. But Leisure Lou can be a tremendous annoyance. He blocks the use of two pumps while he performs a number of time-consuming tasks. First he browses through the store with no intention of making a purchase. Then he washes his car's windshield. Next he visits the restroom to wash his hands and look at the stain on his hip. Last, he walks his dog around the small patches of grass that serve as landscaping.

How Far do These Sources Suggest that Young Henry VIII was an Impressive Figure as a King?
How far do these sources suggest that young Henry VIII was an impressive figure as a king? In the 16th century an impressive figure of a king would mean that he demonstrated power both physically and economically and a good education. However as source two suggests, Henry might be considered less than impressive as he shows insecurities. A stronger argument though is that Henry did demonstrate the features of an impressive king as he had all the attributes listed above which is clear from all three sources. It might be inferred that Henry was less than impressive as he was clearly insecure. Source two shows Henry seeking to compare favourability with his rival king Francis I of France. He persistently asks the Venetian ambassador whether he is more physically impressive than Francis e.g. Henry asks ââ¬Ëwhat sort of legs has he got?ââ¬â¢ Such insecurity might encourage challenges as Henry could be seen as unconfident about his own authority. This argument could gain weight from t he fact that the ambassador would be seeking to provide accurate information to the government of Venice. It could however be seen as the only one incident by a king who had only been on the throne for six years. Also it is not sustained in the other two sources. The strongest argument suggests that Henry VIII was an impressive figure as king. From source two it might be inferred that Henry is very well educated as it shows Henry addressing the Venetian ambassador in French, â⬠His majesty addressing me in Frenchâ⬠. During his time on the throne only rich, well educated people could speak more than their native language. His good education also shows that he has an attribute of an impressive figure of king. The strongest argument which suggests that Henry was an impressive king gains weight from the Venetian ambassador being a reliable source. Source two is a written article so it is more likely to be reliable than a painting. The Venetian ambassador is also likely to be spea king the truth as he wants to tell the Venetian government accurate information and has no reason to lie.Source one also lends weight to the strongest argument that Henry VIII was an impressive figure as a king. Source one implies that Henry is a very rich and powerful king as it shows us spending time practicing his archery withà his guards. ââ¬Å"The king was practicing archery in the garden with the archers of the guard.â⬠It could be inferred from this that Henry has free recreational time as he is already in control of everything else. The argument that he is an impressive king gains weight from this because he has power over everyone, and that he gets people to do the jobs he would normally have to do.This can be inferred from source one as Henry spends his time in the garden ââ¬Å"practicing archery with the archers of the guards.â⬠This suggests that Henry has appointed other people to do the jobs he would have to do whilst he is in the garden practicing archer y. It could also be inferred that he is wealthy because he would be paying these people to do jobs for him. The source is a written document taken from a personal diary of the kingââ¬â¢s Chaplin, John Taylor in 1513; he was also a royal official. The source is likely to be accurate and reliable as it is a personal diary. John Taylor would have been recording what he sees and as it is personal, there is no need to lie. Therefore we can infer that source one is a reliable source, this lends weight to the strongest argument that Henry VII was an impressive figure as king.Henry tried to portray himself as a warrior king during his early reign showing his impressive figure as king. Source two implies that Henry was an impressive warrior king because he says ââ¬Å"look here and I also have a good calf to my legâ⬠. This shows that he is physically impressive, a characteristic of an impressive warrior king. We can rely on this source as it was taken directly from the Venetian ambass adorââ¬â¢s report to his government. We can also infer from source three that Henry is physically impressive as the portrait shows a large man with broad shoulders. This agrees with source two and therefore supports the strongest argument that Henry was an impressive figure as king. However this portrait is by an unknown artist therefore it is very unreliable. It is also highly likely that Henry has paid the artist to make him look like an impressive warrior king. The argument that Henry was an impressive warrior king is also strengthened by source one. We can infer from source one that he had characteristics of a warrior because it tells us of how he was practicing with his guards at archery. Not only was he practicing with them, he also beat them as he hit the mark in the middle. We can rely on this source as it is taken as an extract from a personal diary written by the kingââ¬â¢s Chaplin. The strongest argument suggests that henry was an impressive figure as king. This can b e inferred from all three sources. Source one implies that Henry is an impressive figure as king as he is superior to all of his guards as he beats them at archery, hitting ââ¬Å"the mark in the middleâ⬠. We can also infer from source one that he has power over everyone else. He has enough time to practice archery; this means that he is employing people to do his jobs he would otherwise have to do. Source two also implies Henry was an impressive figure of a king as it tells us that Henry was physically impressive. ââ¬Å"I also have a good calf to my legâ⬠.The argument that Henry was an impressive figure as king is also supported by source three as Henry VIIIââ¬â¢s portrait shows a physically impressive King with broad shoulders. We can also infer from source three that Henry VIII is very wealthy as he is wearing a lot of jewellery. Source two also implies that Henry was well educated as it shows Henry addressing the Venetian ambassador in French, ââ¬Å"His majesty ad dressing me in French.â⬠nery was HHhffAll three sources suggest that Henry was an impressive king as he demonstrates power both physically, economically and he has a good education.

The Mohawks of Akwesasne
Due to its distinctive geographical location along the St. Lawrence River, which ââ¬Å"serves as one of the natural division lines between Canada and the United States,â⬠the Mohawks of Akwesasne have familiarized themselves to the media and the civic society. Some have called the Mohawks ââ¬Å"the most stubborn Native Community in North America, not only for (their) enduring commitment to (their) Ancient Mohawk Territories and Resources, but also for the strong positions (they) maintain over the Aboriginal Rights of (their) Community and (their) Kahniakehaka (Mohawk) Nationâ⬠(Akwesasne para. 1). Despite government intervention (or disturbance) on the affairs of the Mohawk community, they have remained unrelenting in upholding the honor of their indigenous tribe. The so-called ââ¬Å"battleâ⬠for sustainability has been thriving for many decades now.Akwesasne and the MohawksAkwesasne is the home of the Mohawk community. à Akwesasne borders the countries of Canada a nd the United States of America, the Candian Province of Ontario and Quebec; and the American State of New York (Akwesasne para. 2). Because of its location, the jurisdiction of this land is not determined until now. This confusion has caused problems for the 13,000 Mohawks living in Akwesasne, however, they have survived the struggle of adjusting to their jurisdictional condition over the years. As a result, this minority has managed to build solid and independent socio-economic endeavors for their people who are bestowed with many gifts, talents, knowledge, experience, and expertise in various fields of work and art. Over the past ten years, dynamic changes have provided this Mohawk community the opportunity to responsibly manage their Infrastructure, Health and Social Services, Judicial and Law Enforcement System, Environment and Conservation, and Housing and Economic Initiatives (Akwesasne para. 3).Akwesasne Community ProfileThe Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne is located within the Ancient Homelands of (its) Ancestor, which (their) People have occupied and used since time immemorial (Akwesasne para.7). The people are embedded with unexplainable affection to this area composed of approximately 26,000 acres in land mass (about fifty square miles in total area).Comprised of breathtaking islands, the Mohawk community is located within the glorious St. Lawrence River and mainland contained by the St. Lawrence River Valley. It can be found near major Canadian cities such as Ottawa, Ontario and Monteal, Quebec. There are four inhabited districts in the region including Kanatakon/St. Regis Village and Tsi Snaihe/Chenail Districts (within Quebec), Kawennoke/Cornwall Island District (within Ontario), and Tekaswenkarorens/Hogansburg District (within New York).History of Akwesasne and the MohawksAkwesasne is Mohawk community that rightfully deserves the title, ââ¬Å"First Nationâ⬠(Bonaparte para. 1). It used to be a ââ¬Å"place of peaceâ⬠which served as a s afe haven from war for the early Mohawks and other indigenous peoples. Formerly the smallest Mohawk village, but today, Akwesasne is already the largest in terms of population and territory. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy considers Akwesasne the ââ¬Å"capitalâ⬠of the seven communities that make up the Mohawk Nation (Bonaparte, para 1).The term Mohawk can be literally translated as ââ¬Å"place of partridgesâ⬠since thousands of a species of game bird are surrounding the shores of the St. Lawrence River and its tributaries. à The first Mohawks and natives of Akwesasne engaged in hunting, fishing, and trading. A certain group by the name ââ¬Å"St. Lawrence Iroquoiansâ⬠(their identity is still debatable) was believed to have built pillars of ââ¬Å"longhouse villages found in the rich soil of the St. Lawrence River Valley.â⬠According to artifacts, ââ¬Å"St. Lawrence Iroquoiansâ⬠were captured and hid in a village called Hochelaga which was considered as one with the Mohawk community.Wars followed and the Mohawks fought against the tribes, Hurons and Algonquins, who were under French control during that time. In time more than half of the Mohawk population (which had already been weakened by epidemics and war) migrated to the village on the south bank of the St. Lawrence near the Lachine Rapids (Bonaparte para. 5). They formed a new community which they called Kahnawake (at the rapids) where the Hurons, Algonquins, and other Iroquois converts (converted by the Jesuits) from Oneida and Onondaga united with them.Bonaparteââ¬â¢s study also focused and expounded on the ââ¬Å"Seven Nations of Canadaâ⬠as stated:In time the population of these villages grew so large that new ones were established. By the 1750's these villages eventually united in an alliance that Mohawks knew as Tsiata Nihononwentsiake, also known as the Seven Nations of Canada, the Seven Fires, and the Seven Villages. When this union was formalized, it consisted of the Mohawks of Kahnawake (Caughnawaga); the Mohawks, Algonquins, and Nippissings of Kanesatake (Oka); the Abenakis of Odanak (St. Francis) in what is now southern Quebec; the Hurons of Wendake (Lorette), just west of Quebec City; and the Iroquois (mostly Oneidas and Onondagas) of Sawehkatsi (Oswegatchie), site of present-day Ogdensburg, New York. Even though as many as twenty-two different nations were represented at these new settlements by the early 1700's, they were nevertheless able to maintain a distinct cultural identification as Huron, Algonquin, and Iroquois communities in their own right (para. 6).The cultural model of this new confederacy was the Rotinonsionni (ââ¬Å"People of the Longhouse,â⬠) also known as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Five Nations, the Six Nations, and the League of the Iroquois (Bonaparte para. 7). Despite strong Jesuit influence over the Mohawks, they have remained a strong clan and have maintained their cultural practices and customs.Re lations between the Seven Nations of Canada and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy during the last decades of the 18th century were contentious thanks to the mad rush of land sales and treaty negotiations that stirred up old animosities and disputes over territory (Bonaparte para. 21). At this time, war broke out causing so much suffering for the people of Akwesasne. Many colonizers tried to change the traditional system of the Mohawks but they remained firm and have shunned away these invaders. The last decade of the 19th century saw drastic changes in the political landscape of Akwesasne and the other Mohawk communities, who were still governed by the old ââ¬Å"life chiefsâ⬠(Bonaparte para. 22). Non-native governments tried to implement a new electoral system but these were rejected by the Mohawks to the extent of causing trouble. The life chiefs were punished; however, they did not give up hoping that the traditional election would be restored. In spite of these affronts to Mohaw k cultural and political sovereignty, the last half of the 19th century witnessed a cultural renaissance of sorts at Akwesasne and her fellow Mohawk communities (Bonaparte para. 23). This includes the emergence of native products such as Mohawk baskets, beadwork, snowshoes, cradleboards, and the rise of their high-steel construction industry, which gave occupation to the Mohawks. Throughout the early 20th century the identification of the Mohawk communities with the banner of the Seven Nations of Canada began to wane in favor of that of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, viewed by many as older and purer of the two since it originated long before European contact (Bonaparte para. 25).In the early part of the 20th century, the Mohawks engaged in exporting liquor from Canada to the United States, which was not as open as the past centuries because of controlled legislations on liquor transportation. Throughout the last decades of the 20th century, Akwesasne continued to feel the long-term effects of the St. Lawrence Seaway (Bonaparte para.33). The agricultural and fishing industry weakened so the Mohawks were forced to seek greener pastures by working in factories and establishments in big cities in New York. Cultural issues conflicted with this economic stabilization. Mohawks, who moved away from Akwesasne, felt estrangement and have adapted non-Mohawk practices.Present Situation of the MohawksCurrently, commercialization and expansion of the Mohawks have become prevalent and have changed the lives of these indigenous people in one way or another. Their rich history and cultural heritage may be taken for granted by some but historians and anthropologists who have studied this unique tribe continue to hope that the difference it has made in this world would be appreciated by present-day societies. The remaining Mohawk community is still active though in promoting and maintaining the culture they have always been accustomed to, which is making them a stronger nation.
